Rules for Big Forty Solitaire
Play Big FortyDescription:
A one-deck variant of Forty Thieves that allows stack moves. Personally, I think they should have called it "Bad Forty". It only turns into a game of skill if you are lucky enough to be able to open a column, and not much skill is required then.
Cards:
One standard deck. Since colors don't matter, politaire substitutes a four-color deck of cards..
Goal:
Move all cards to the foundation.
Foundation:
Four foundation piles.Any ace may be moved to any empty pile in the foundation.
A card may be added onto a foundation pile if it is one higher than the old top card of the pile and of the same suit. Thus, the only card that could be played on a 7♦ would be an 8♦.
Once on the foundation, cards may not be moved back off..
Tableau:
Ten tableau piles of four cards each, splayed downward. All cards are dealt face up.A card may be added onto a tableau pile if it is one lower than the old top card of the pile and of the same suit. Thus, the only card that could be played on a Q♥ would be a J♥.
Cards on the tableau that are not under another card are available for play onto the foundation or any other tableau pile.
Empty spaces in the tableau may be filled by any card.
Groups of cards in sequence down may be moved from one tableau column to another if all cards are of the same suit.
Stock and Waste:
The remaining cards form the stock and there is one waste pile. Each time you click on the stock, one card will be dealt from the stock to the waste. Unlimited passes through the stock are permitted.
The top card of the waste is available for play to the tableau or the foundation.
Common Variations:
Some descriptions allow no redeals instead of unlimited redeals.
Similar Games:
- Ali Baba (Play) (Rules)
- A one-deck variation of Forty and Eight where you can move sequences of cards together instead of just one at a time. With 40 cards in the tableau, you only have 12 cards in your deck which makes for a lot of unsolvable games. But with a bit of luck you can open an empty space in your tableau and then things are likely to go smoothly.
- Forty Thieves (Play) (Rules)
- Similar to Forty and Eight, but the tableau has forty cards in ten stacks of four, and we only allow one pass through the deck.
- Cassim (Play) (Rules)
- A version of Ali Baba with a smaller tableau and an infinity of redeals. In the One Thousand and One Nights Cassim was Ali Baba's brother and the leader of the Forty Thieves.
