Rules for Alexander the Great Solitaire

Play Alexander the Great

Description:

Thomas Warfield's more challenging variation of Clover Leaf. This is identical to Clover Leaf except that their are fewer fans each containing more cards.

Cards:

One standard deck.

Goal:

Move all cards to the foundation.

Foundation:

There are two groups of foundation piles.

Red Foundation:

The red foundation contains two piles.

An red ace is initially dealt to each red foundation pile.

A card may be added onto a red foundation pile if it is one higher than the old top card of the pile and of the same suit. Thus, the only card that could be played on a 6♣ would be a 7♣.

Black Foundation:

The black foundation contains two piles.

A black king is initially dealt to each black foundation pile.

A card may be added onto a black foundation pile if it is one lower than the old top card of the pile and of the same suit. Thus, the only card that could be played on a 7♥ would be a 6♥.

Once on any foundation, cards may not be moved back off..

Fan:

Twelve fan piles of four cards each, splayed downward. All cards are dealt face up.

A card may be added onto a fan pile if it is one higher than or one lower than the old top card of the pile and of the same suit. Thus, the cards that could be played on 8♣ would be 7♣ or 9♣.

Cards on the fan that are not under another card are available for play onto the foundation or any other fan pile.

Empty spaces in the fan may be filled by aces or kings only.

Only one card may moved at a time, never sequences.

Common Variations:

Warfield's choice to call this game "Alexander the Great" may cause some confusion, since that name is used by many to describe a game more commonly called "La Belle Lucie".
